Description: The plan of the late Sasanian city shows the sacred precincts within a rectangular enclosure. A Processional Way from the main entrance to the north led directly to the shrine of the Fire Temple, and beyond to the lake at the south end of the enclosure. The Fire Temple of Atur-Gushnasp, one of three major Fire Temples in Iran, gained special importance as a royal pilgrimage site during the reigns of Khusro I (AD 531-579) and Khusro II (AD 591-628). This special situation resulted in the double function of the precincts: as a royal residence and as a pilgrimage site.
