Site: Takht-e Sulaiman

Description: The archaeological site of Takht-e Sulaiman, in the Iranian province of Azerbaijan, corresponds with the Sasanian city of Ganzak or Shiz. Ganzak housed the Fire Temple of the King of the Warriors (Atur-Gushnasp), in a Zoroastrian Persian sacred precincts, situated beside a bottomless lake with an inexhaustible supply of water. Although the site was a religious center prior to Sasanian times, the remnants of rubble and mortar buildings now visible at the site are from Sasanian buildings that survived the sack by Heraclius in AD 624.
