Site: Bishapur

Description: In AD 266, in the city center of Bishapur, at the intersection of the city’s two orthogonal main axes, was erected a commemorative monument honoring Shapur I. Here, a statue of Shapur, now lost, was placed on a pedestal backed by two stone columns. The function of a number of other monuments in the official sector of Bishapur remains uncertain. Notable is an immense structure with a cruciform plan, some 22 m square, flanked by walls embellished with painted and stuccoed niches.
