Description: Bishapur, situated in the Iranian Fars province, built by Shapur I (AD 241-272), son of Ardashir, was a Sasanian administrative center accessible by roads from Ctesiphon to the north, Firuzabad to the southeast, Istakhr to the east, and the Persian Gulf to the west. The rectangular layout of Shapur’s city is often attributed to Roman engineers, resettled in Iran after Shapur’s Roman victories. The town was naturally protected by high gorges and rocky escarpments that open into a fertile plain watered by the Shapur river. To the north, lies the river gorge on which were carved Shapur’s rock reliefs, to the south, over a the rocky cliff, are found the ruins of a Sasanian fortress that dominated the town.
