6.0 Using TMJava - General Information

TMJava incorporates many of the functions of TMWin. Figure 1 illustrates the ease of accessing web resources linked to a map. To view web resources, (1) activate the select arrow (see Map Toolbar) and click on a feature of the map or draw a bounding box the encompasses a selected area of the map. As in the example, (2) a grey screen will appear that shows the map layers that have information for the selection made. The number of records for the layer will show in brackets. Click one of the listed resources. If there is more than one record for the layer, (3) a table of resources with associated attribute data will appear. Choose a record and link to the (4) web resource for the record.

6.1 Map Toolbar

The map toolbar includes a variety of tools for navigating a dynamic map. Some of the tools might be familiar (zoom and select features), while some are unique features of TimeMap maps (animation). The diagram below identifies the toolbar map viewing tools.

Use the magnifying glasses to zoom in(+) and zoom out (-), or the crossed bi-directional arrows to move around the map, or pan, in any direction. Use the single arrow to select map features, either by clicking on a single point or by drawing a bounding box around a number of features, and view attribute information and web resources for the selected feature(s). The copyright button shows information, including intellectual property, about each layer of information on the map. Select the label button to identify features by name or another attribute value, and use the animation button (see below) to create a dynamic view of the data as it changes over time. Theme and extent selection display views of the map based on a theme designed by the map's author. To use the zoom to selected layer feature, first select a layer from the legend and then click on the button. The map view will change to include all the content of the selected layer. The zoom to maximum extent feature will show the maximum extent, or view, of the entire map, with all layers selected. Use the search field to search for information by map layer.

6.2 Animation

Use the animation button (see above) to create an automated dynamic view of the map content as it changes over time. Map content must be time-enabled in order to use this feature. Try the example settings here on the map below. After changing the settings, click on the right facing triangle and watch the map change.

6.3 Map Legend

Use the functions of the map legend to turn layers off and on, expand the legend for more cartographic information, and tell when a map layer is out of spatial or temporal range.

6.4 Map Timebar

The ability to dyanically view map content based on time as wells as place is an unique feature of TimeMap. When the features on the map include time values as part of the attribute data, geographic data with corresponding temporal data, the display of those features change as the timebar is adjusted to reflect different points or ranges of time.

Use the tool buttons on the timebar and slide the triangles at the ends of the lower bar to set a time period for the map display. The maximum time range depends on the start and end time values for the data. The range can be limited to the smallest unit of time for the data (year, month, day, hour) depending on the nature of the temporal data.

Use this 2-step process to adjust the time range and zoom in on the timebar
