The following applies to the whole Itbayat stories.

Note: 1. Please note that I have transcribed from both the cassette audio tape and from the video found on your files in www.youtube.com.
2.  Regarding this particular section, the Itbayat Story by Mrs Gato, the arrangement between the audio tape and the video recording is not the same.
3.  Please see the difference in the arrangements as I have noted on the beginning of each of the three parts.
4.  When you see something like Counter … those numbers were from the transcription machine.
5.  Italics and or those inside parenthesis are my explanations or the more common Ivatan word terminologies.

II. The following is the second part or section on the cassette audio recording. However, it is the First Part of the video on You Tube.com. Origin Story of Ivatan.

                  ENGLISH TRANSLATION

I.The following is first part on the cassette audio recording. However, it is the Second Part on You Tube video.

4 min:32 sec: The life… Ever since, our family started as farmers, and we have always been industrious. That is where and how we have been able to raise all our eight children.
4:44 However, now they are all married.

4:47 Even now we can still go to the fields to work (farm).  Everyday we go separately to our farms because we can no longer look after each of our children as they are now each on their own.

Counter 005.
5:00 Now at 76, which is my age, I can still walk to the fields to farm. 5:07 That includes to cultivate: clear out, prepare, plant, harvest, and bring home to finish whatever still need to be completed.
5:15 There is not much else (to do) for livelihood except to farm. 5:20 The truth is if not for that what else is there for us to do in order to survive.

5:24 Because all our children now live individually on their own, no one else among them live with us any longer.
5:32 It is just us now, and so once in a while we get really exhausted. 5:35

(Counter 10 on cassette audio recording

II. The following is the second part or section on the cassette audio recording. However, it is the First Part of the video on You Tube.com. Origin Story of Ivatan.

Counter  011.

Video Time: 0:00 to 0:19 intelligible

0:20 …Ah, What is this? First is your name and then mention this place where you live, and then you can tell about your story. 0:32 Mention about them in the beginning. 0:34

Okay (yes).
0:36 “I am Andrea Gato. My hometown is here in Itbayat.  0:41
My short story/ What I am about to relate/tell is about Podalang and Raknan who were relatives. They were the only children of a couple.  They truly love each other. However, treated separately (differently) by their parents, foremost on their needs and their food. 1:04 The work of these two young men was in the building of ‘tataya’ (small ocean fishing boat). The farm where these brothers used to harvest and carry home their yam
became known as the ‘Hill of Podalan’.

1:17 When they leave for the farm or forest in search for and to chop down and haul the lumber that they needed their mother would have wrapped each of the brothers’ lunch and would hand to Raknan and Podalan each one’s own share.

1:30  During lunch time they would eat together and then they would notice that their lunch pack is not the same. Raknans food was more special. Podalans food also has yam (the main food item) but is very different.  1:47 Raknan, the younger brother would share Podalan because he always like it, who would comment, “This is (like) our Father and Mother’s lunch (again).”

1:58  The younger brother would then cry because he felt so bad of the way they were treated differently and of his tremendous pity for his brother.  Podalang wanted so much to eat the same. They were always very good of friends.
2:13
They have a place to tend to their domestic animals because they have goats. This place where their goats were kept was also where Raknan died, oh it was Podalan (who died). This same place where the goats all done even though his brother was already dead.

2:38
Raknan even offered water to the goat to try to tame it, that he might find out who has been there tending to the goat. He gathered plenty of fresh grass feed, tried to tame and then hug it, and bury it later because he will be late to feed whoever will be giving feed to their goat.
3:00 In a very short time came one that was loose and looked very contented. Then at that very moment he saw his brother hanging because the yam was all gone. He immediately hugged his brother so tight, and started asking where he has been.
3:17 “I am no longer on earth, because I have been gone/lost since yesterday.”

3:21 “Oh, you can come with me, and I also go wherever you go.” So he said, “You must come with me because where I walked was very difficult because it was different kind of path/road.”

3:32 “If you can pass or go through it, then I will also be able to,” says one brother. But Raknan he will not allow him to go with him, regardless.

3:39 Both cried as they know they were already separated. Raknan must have realized how big… maybe the road he was taking to cross must have been a lake or a huge water source. As he was leaving his brother because he no longer wanted to befriend him he found himself deeper into… smoke field road!

And so, where or what place may he be going or headed to next? 4:01

4:02sec
That is now the end, as that is all I can remember.
You must forgive me since it is short, because I can not relate (remember the rest) any more.

4:10sec
That is all I can remember.  Though they were relatives their separation was not proper.  And then he left him there.

4:23
He was not treated well by their parents.
4:27sec: End of this part…

Note: 1   These Part II has taken me much time as I tried my best to transcribe Mrs. Gatos’ diction and expressions. A few words were completely intelligible.
2  The English translation has been done in way that the expressions, thoughts and meaning of Mrs Gato are kept in its true sense.
3  In the column above I have highlighted with green color the time lapse from 2:38 up to 3:58. This portion has been particularly difficult.

III. The following is the third part or section on the cassette audio recording. However, it is the Second Part of the video on youtube.com

5:41
You cover with blanket, cry in place of others, where else will you find work/employment other than farming.
5:51 When one is paid to work their carabao (water buffalo) can be brought to do the hauling/pulling. 5:57

5:58
Everyday of work yet, there is always more to do. 6:03  Us in our family we can still do much like others who are raising their cattle at the (municipal) ranch. 6:10
And where we fench-in or coral our carabao (water buffalo) is all we have since we are much older now.

6:21 There is not much else that we can do. We just have to pity our selves because that is where we belong.

6:30 There are still other townmates who want to continue farming and tend to their own animals.

No matter where we can, we still have to farm as that is where we belong. There are still people in our village or town who like to farm and raise their own domestic animals. For example those who have cattle at the ranch stay in Itbayat.
