Abstract

Area Informatics is a new paradigm that has been designed to give the information infrastructure to Integrated Area Research. Integrated Area Research is a kind of comparative studies on themes that are relevant across distinct areas using integrated research procedures. The emphasis is on interregional relationships and variables and how they link with area-specific characteristics. Area Informatics includes variety kinds of information theories/techniques, and puts special emphases on metadata standards, ontology, geographic information systems/science (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS), remote sensing (RS), and data-mining. This presentation will introduce the framework of Area Informatics and some spatiotemporal applications that have been developed by H-GIS (Humanities GIS) project.
