ECAI Central


The ECAI Central Office, under the Dean of International and Area Studies (IAS) at the University of California, Berkeley, acts as the central coordinating body for ECAI. Located in 310 Dwinelle Hall and 2225B Hearst Street, ECAI Central holds records of members and affiliated projects, coordinates conferences, conducts fundraising, manages finances, oversees the ECAI Information Technology architecture, and maintains the ECAI Website.

Director: Lewis R. Lancaster, Professor Emeritus of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures.
The Director sets ECAI policy in consultation with the Co-Director and the ECAI Strategy Committee. The Director is the primary representative of the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative. The Director conducts fund-raising initiatives in support of ECAI activities, meets with donors, develops funding strategies. The Director maintains communications with collaborating institutions of higher learning and other major cultural institutions. The Director is selected from the faculty of the University of California by the Dean of IAS.

Co-Director: Michael Buckland, Professor, School of Information Management and Systems.
The Co-Director, in consultation with the Director and the ECAI Strategy Committee, sets the research agenda for the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative. To this end, the Co-Director directs application for grants supporting ECAI activities. The Co-Director represents ECAI when the Director is unavailable. The Co-Director acts as Chair of the Strategy Committee, in charge of all Strategy Committee affairs.

Director of ECAI Tech: Jeanette Zerneke
The Director of ECAI Tech manages the overall strategy and implementation of the Information Technology architecture of ECAI. The Director of ECAI Tech, in consultation with the ECAI Strategy Committee and the members of ECAI Tech, sets the agenda for the meetings of the ECAI Tech group and the research and development agenda for work conducted at collaborating institutions, and oversees electronic publications.

Technical Associate: Kimberly Carl
The ECAI Technical Associate maintains the ECAI Clearinghouse, TimeMap Java server, and the ECAI Website. She assists with electronic publications and works with affiliated projects to promote accessibility of research data within ECAI.
