California Ivatan Community Videos

Batanes Oral Histories

People of the Ivatan cultural area share a diaspora link to California among other places. These recordings of Ivatan Community gatherings illustrate their cultural links.

Ivatan speakers identify with distinct local municipalities: Itbayat (northern island), Basco (provincial capital - Batan), Mahatao (west coastal mid-Batan Island town), Ivana (southwest coastal Batan Island town), Uyugan (southeast Batan Island), Sabtang (southern island). These localities are considered a source of pride and distinction.

The Batanes Cultural Atlas illustrates variations in the Ivatan world in terms of geography, topography, land use, archaeology, history, language, and culture. North of the Batanes, Orchid Island includes six villages of Ivatan related speakers.
