www.MountainSongs.net Gary Flint
Abstract Mountain Songs, 山之歌 Shanzhege, is a bilingual, database website, fully searchable, which connects mostly ancient Chinese poetry to the sites where the poems were written, by means of digital images and GIS coordinates. The sites and poems and can be located on Google Earth as well as by MIT Timeline and TimeMap. The design of Mountain Songs is unique in the way Chinese characters can be viewed and downloaded. When a poem page is opened, all users view the poems in identical attractive graphic Chinese font we have selected. Click on the 'Text Mode' box and this graphic font instantaneously coverts to text which can be downloaded and edited. Poems are displayed in traditional Chinese, English translations and pinyin with tonal marks. The majority of the translations are ours. However a large number are the work of 24 major academics, professional translators and poets, whom we designate as TransPoets. MountainSongs is a work in process. Presently it includes 900 poems, over 250 poets, 163 mountains, 646 temples, and 1,158 other sites.
